Lady Liberty

made by Judy Kriehn

Another of the Suzy's Quilt Shop challenges was to use fabrics from Moda's "God Bless America" series. A variety of fabrics from the line, including small and large star prints, a few plaids, and a border print were given to challenge participants.

We could add all we wanted to, but had to use all of the original fabrics. I set about collecting some more coordinating fabrics so that I could achieve a "scrappy" look with what I call "loopy log cabins" (the sides are rather randomly shaped.)

In my head, I saw a portrait of the statue of liberty, so I started looking for greyish colors that wouldn't clash too much with the muted colors of the challenge fabrics.

Then of course, came the challenge of finding a picture of the statue to work from. Not easy when you are in Texas, and the real thing is in New York... I found a rather fuzzy picture in a reference book, and set to work enlarging it to work with my design.

The large open areas behind the statue are pieced using paper-piecing techniques learned from Karen Stone - just on a much larger scale.

The hair, torch, and gown are shaped using fabric manipulation and layers of batting to achieve lots of texture and dimension. The Lady Liberty parts were machine appliqued to the background.
